IP (Internet Protocol) - an explanation

Originally developed by the Department of Defense to support interworking of dissimilar computers across a network. Protocol works in conjunction with TCP and is usually identified as TCP/IP. Connectionless protocol that operates at network layer (layer 3) of OSI model.
